Сходна по функциям с Ассоциацией молодых христиан [ Young Men's Christian Association]. Первая организация такого рода создана в 1854 в г. Балтиморе, шт. Мэриленд, но движение начало развиваться только после создания такого клуба в 1874 в Нью-Йорке.
